map-utopia

The more control we poses over our environment and ourselves, the less we can accept either randomness or imperfection. Medical technologies might present solutions designed to assist an individual, yet they often represent an aspiration to order in the social sphere. It seems that the desire to abolish imperfections from the nano to the global scale is at the root of most technologies.

Utopian ambitions are often attached to scientific discoveries and bioethical ideologies or belief systems. From the Raelians to the Abolitionist Society, Transhumanist and Technocratic groups or movements, the answers posed by science are viewed as humanity’s salvation and the beginning of scientific utopia.

The quest for an utopian society has been the driving force behind most political and religious movements. However after millennia of efforts and failed attempts, is the utopian ideal still valid? Perhaps the fantasy of abolishing suffering is simply impossible? Undesirable? And how does one quantify or define suffering? Does the end of disease necessarily equals happiness?
