Survivor’s guilt

thewall1

Survivor’s guilt, the mental condition that occurs when a person perceives themselves to have done wrong by surviving a traumatic event, was first diagnosed in the 1960s as a condition suffered by holocaust survivors. It was later observed as part of post traumatic stress related to combat, natural disasters and even work redundancies. Interestingly the phenomenon of survivor’s guilt can now be experienced after genetic testing amongst the family members who are found to be mutation free. (Tibben 1992, Huggins, 1992)

Does this mean the mutation is above all other genes as a bonding agent and representative of identity? Is avoiding the illness also an exclusion from the family narrative?
