The interesting thing in treating this kind of behaviour as an expression of parental protection is that it is a measure aiming to protect the child not from an imminent danger but from risk. The focus on avoidance rather than treatment is a result of our “Risk Society” and reflection of a Health & Safety attitude which favours preliminary caution, risk assessment and worry over consequential problem solving. Harm is better avoided then dealt with.

It can be argued that a mutation one inherits from their ancestors cannot be seen as a definite harm, but more as a series of potential risks. Where does this risk translate into an actual threat which demands preventive action?
