The geneticisation of disease has individualising, deterministic and reductive tendencies (Lippman, 1991).
Determinism seem to be one of the hardest things to deal with. Choice and a self-determinative approach to life have become such important components in our existence. A predictable path in life has been replaced with a world of possibilities or opportunities, to know what the future holds seem like a burden to bear. Since when did determinism become such a negative thing? Is predictability a blessing or a curse?
There seem to be a dissonance between the way in which we employ science to take all mystery out of life (with genetic testing as one of the tools we designed in order to predict and control our futures) and our reluctance to accept a predetermined fate.
